Virtual Desktop Environment

Virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) is a virtualization solution that provides and manages virtual desktops via virtual machines.   • Instant backup capabilities- VDI eliminates reliance on individual machines for storage, lowering data risks if machines are misplaced, stolen, or suffer hard drive failures. All core software, applications, and files are kept on remote servers, making backup and restoration simple.
  • Accessibility- End users can "bring your own device" (BYOD) and use their devices to gain remote access to their files, applications, and cloud services from any location using VDI. This essentially creates a digital workspace/remote desktop, improving user experience and making it significantly easier for employees to work from home by allowing them to use PCs, tablets, smartphones, and thin clients.

VDI Basic Components:

  • VDI is made up of servers that "host" desktop operating systems and application software within "guest" virtual machines that can be accessed from any device. Thus, at its core, VDI enables the abstraction of hardware and software on both the server and client sides.
  • Hypervisor: VDI employs a hypervisor to install multiple desktop operating systems on a server as virtual machines. This hypervisor, which can be hardware-based (bare-metal) or software-based (hosted), also manages the VMs, allowing each to function as a standalone computer with the necessary virtualized hardware and software resources, such as applications, at its disposal.
  • Connection Broker: The hypervisor is also in charge of brokering client device connections to the VMs on the servers. Client devices, also known as "virtual desktops," connect to the server, boot up a VM's operating system, and then run the applications that reside within the same VM.
  • Operating System Instances: Because VMs virtualize the hardware resources that serve the operating systems and applications, the actual machines that run the virtual desktops can be of any type, including desktop or laptop PCs, tablets, and even mobile phones. They no longer even need to meet the minimum requirements for running an operating system and applications. The cost savings that result from this capability are one of VDI's selling points.
  • How does VDI compare with desktop virtualization? VDI is not the same as desktop virtualization as a category. A single desktop computer runs a single guest virtual machine in desktop virtualization. VDI, on the other hand, is an alternative to other types of virtual desktop delivery (like hosted shared solutions that connect endpoints to a shared desktop or local desktop virtualization where desktop environment runs directly on the client). VDI migrates the desktop operating system from a local computer to a shared hosting environment.
